Info Alert: Former CPUC Commissioner Appointed to Lead CARB

Posted December 9th, 2020 | Status:

Governor Newsom announced today he appointed California Public Utilities Commissioner (CPUC) Liane Randolph as the new Chair of the California Air Resources Board (CARB). You can read the Governor’s announcement here.

The appointment comes after the retirement of Mary Nichols, the long-time chair of CARB who served in this capacity since 2007 and from 1975–82.

BizFed Institute recently held an Energy Forum featuring Liane Randolph as the keynote speaker where she addressed the current state of energy, our climate change goals, and challenges we face during the pandemic.

Randolf has a strong background in government where she was Deputy Secretary and General Counsel at the California Natural Resources Agency from 2011 to 2014, an Attorney at Pillsbury, Winthrop, Shaw, Pittman from 2007 to 2011, and served as Chair of the California Fair Political Practices Commission from 2003 to 2007, where she also served as a Staff Attorney from 1996 to 1997.

In addition, South Coast Air Quality Management District Board Member (AQMD) Judy Mitchell, who also represented the district at CARB, officially retired yesterday. The Governor also announced that he appointed AQMD board member Gideon Kracov to replace her.

Gideon was appointed by Governor Newsom to the AQMD in March. Kracov has been owner of the Law Office of Gideon Kracov since 2004 where he specializes in environmental and land use law, was a member of the State Mining and Geology Board at the Department on Conservation from 2014 to 2018 and served as a deputy city attorney at the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office from 2002 to 2004. Our AQMD/CARB Committee met with him in September to hear his priorities and serve as a business resource for him as he takes on the many challenges the district faces.

BizFed looks forward to working with both Randolph and Kracov as they fulfill their new roles at the California Air Resources Board and wish them the best of luck moving forward.
