We have a major policy victory to celebrate, thanks to your coordinated advocacy efforts. An aggressive warehouse ban that would have killed scores of jobs died today in committee. AB 1000 (Reyes) failed to pass out of the Assembly Committee on Local Government, cementing our victory early in the legislative process.
AB 1000 was the third attempt in three years to implement a statewide setback of 1,000 feet from "sensitive receptors" for all new and expanded warehouses 100,000 square feet or larger in California. It also created, for the first time, a private right of action empowering virtually anyone to act as a prosecutor to sue or block warehouse projects.
California is already struggling to find adequate off-docking space to house goods transported from ports. Southern California alone is home to more than 1.6 million trade-related jobs supported by warehouse operations. There are millions more in manufacturing, construction, and transportation that also depend on warehousing.
Stay vigilant and look out for developments from our policy team. This proposal is bound to resurface. We'll fight back. Again.
