ACTION ALERT: Amplify overlooked consequences of wage hikes

  • Posted: August 24, 2023

Share This :

You saw the op-ed by BizFed leaders we shared about the unintended and overlooked consequences of aggressive wage hikes. It's time to step up our advocacy messaging. We're urging all BizFed members to amplify sensible business voices before the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors considers a wage ordinance at its September 12 meeting. The proposal threatens to upend our tourism sector and decimate jobs across various industries.

The proposed ordinance seeks to immediately raise minimum wage for hotel and theme park workers in unincorporated areas by nearly 50% – from $16.90 to $25.00 an hour. By 2028, it would increase pay to $30.00 an hour. That's a pay increase of nearly 80% in five years! The proposal introduced by Supervisor Janice Hahn also mandates service charges.

BizFed supports sensible minimum wage increases that improve livability for all Angelenos. However, unreasonable wage hikes with aggressively accelerated timelines that uplift only select workers will quickly backfire by triggering layoffs and hurting small businesses that work with hotels and theme parks.

Tell county supervisors to consider these overlooked and indirect impacts before charging forward. Click below to take action.
