Joseph -- ACTION ALERT : Rally to save Costa-Hawkins & defeat rent control in Long Beach on Monday  At our December 2017 BizFed Board meeting we took official steps to oppose efforts to repeal Costa-Hawkins and received early warnings on local rent control efforts for the November 2018 election. Costa–Hawkins is a California state law, enacted in 1995, which places limits on municipal rent control ordinances. Costa–Hawkins prohibits cities from establishing rent control over certain kinds of residential units and prohibits local cities from establishing new rent control policies. Long Beach is one of those cities (Pasadena and Inglewood are others) where efforts are being made to establish rent control using the ballot box.  A local opportunity to stop these efforts will take place this Monday at 5:30pm where Johanna Cunningham, Apartment Association of Southern California is organizing a strategy meeting to inform and mobilize the business community to defeat these efforts in the City of Long Beach. LONG BEACH RENT CONTROL RALLY WHAT: Rally to oppose Rent Control in Long Beach WHEN: Monday, March 12th at 5:30 pm WHERE: Please contact Jerard Wright jerard.wright@bizfed.org for specific location An added thanks to Beverly Kentworthy & Fred Sutton, California Apartment Association for informing us that there is a website for joining this coalition, www.savecostahawkins.com (or click on image above or use link below). Please feel free to distribute to your networks to get the word out and build a strong statewide coalition to mobilize for the 2018 elections.  This website in combination to Monday’s rally will help strengthen our coalition to stop these local initiatives which hurts the local mom and pop apartment owners and negatively affects our economy by making housing even more expensive.
