I'm excited to share a major win for housing providers that BizFed leaders spent months advocating for. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted this week to phase out the county's pandemic-era eviction moratorium and rent freeze by the end of the year. This will expedite efforts to house more Angelenos amid the state's exploding homelessness crisis and housing shortage emergency.
We want to shoutout Supervisor Kathryn Barger for carrying the motion to responsibly phase out the 2020 order. We also want to express our gratitude to Supervisor Holly Mitchell and Supervisor Janice Hahn for supporting the motion, getting it across the finish line on a 3-2 vote.
We couldn't have spurred this positive, impactful, timely change without the tenacity of BizFed leaders Fred Sutton (California Apartment Association) and Danielle Leidner-Peretz (Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles). BizFed Senior Policy Manager Chris Wilson helped lead the charge and stepped up to testify ahead of the vote.
The approved 3-2 motion will communicate to residents all cities in LA County that the countywide moratorium is set to end December 31st. Regular updates to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will be provided by staff until the county’s emergency tenant protections are completely phased out. The motion will also remind residents of existing tenants’ rights, responsibilities for property owners, and available assistance programs to help renters impacted by COVID-19.
