ACTION ALERT: Protect hospitality jobs from unworkable policies

Share This :

Please join BizFed in stepping up to strengthen the California Hospitality United Coalition (CHUC).

The statewide business coalition is focused on pending local regulations that harm hospitality jobs and small businesses that rely on tourism and business travel. We voted in April to join the CHUC in order to protect the pandemic-ravaged hospitality industry, a key driver of our regional economy.

In 2020, the hospitality industry generated $1.5 billion in state and local tax revenue in Los Angeles. It supported 177,300 local jobs. Taxes generated by hotel guests alone are the second largest source of tax revenue in the city of LA. These funds support essential city services such as law enforcement and homeless services.

THE THREAT

Special interest groups are pushing policies that could devastate the hospitality economy and jobs in various sectors. These policy proposals include:

  • Adding new fees to the cost of renovating or building new hotels.
  • Creating workload limitations that would triple the cost of hotel housekeeping.
  • Requiring all hotels to shelter unhoused individuals in any vacant hotel room alongside paying guests.
  • Expanding PAGA by allowing lawsuits against any hotel that refuses to be used as a homeless shelter.

THE IMPACT

These policies would make California's tourism and convention industry less competitive, hurting small enterprise owners and communities throughout the state. They would also lead to the loss of local transient occupancy tax revenue and create additional red tape around new development. We need to stand up and fight for jobs, workers, and the economy – together.
