ACTION ALERT: Keep Southern California Affordable for MILLIONS of Southern Californians

There was unprecedented attendance at BizFed's joint  Energy and Environment Committee/AQMD-CARB Committee meeting over Zoom this morning featuring SCAQMD Governing Board and Air Resources Board member Gideon Krakov--but we still need BizFed members to lend their voices either virtually or in person at the South Coast Air Quality Management District's Stationary Source Committee meeting TOMORROWFriday, December 20 at 10:30 a.m.

Rules 1111 and 1121 would set NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emission limits for residential and commercial space heating and residential water heating appliances at ZERO.

Recent analysis revealed that for a building constructed in 2008, the cost of rewiring and retrofitting to support electric appliances would exceed $36,000 per unit. These exorbitant costs are likely to lead to rent increases and place additional financial pressure on tenants in a region already crippled by housing affordability issues.

BizFed members have serious concerns with SCAQMD Proposed Amended Rules 1111 (Reduction of NOx Emissions from Natural-Gas-Fired Furnaces) and 1121 (Reduction of NOx Emissions from Residential Type Natural-Gas-Fired Water Heaters). On Friday, the SCAQMD Stationary Source Committee will receive an update from staff on these proposed amended rules, which is a vital opportunity to make our voices heard.

Help keep Southern California affordable for millions of Californians NOW.

We strongly encourage you to participate in this AQMD Stationary Source Committee meeting and provide testimony about the significant potential impacts of the proposed amended rules, in person or via teleconference, per the instructions in the official meeting agenda. KEY MESSAGING POINTS:

  • Support proposed and additional alternative compliance measures to address cost, energy availability, permitting delays, and other additional issues.
  • The District still needs to do extensive public outreach to make Southern Californians aware of these rules, per November 1 Governing Board direction.
  • Aligning compliance dates with those contained in 2022 Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP) by January 1, 2029 is a MUST.
