VICTORY ALERT – Big Win for Long Beach Hotels

On Tuesday night, the City of Long Beach considered a proposal that would have further and unnecessarily regulated the hotel industry. Under the guise of creating a safer working environment, the true intent of the ordinance was to force a collective bargaining agreement between hotel workers and hotel management - forcing the industry to unionize.  Some of the regulations listed in the ordinance are already being done by hotels. Long Beach hotels take the safety of their workers very seriously and offer sexual-harassment training and self-defense classes to create a safer environment. Additional regulations would have created undue burdens forcing hotels to choose between protecting their guests or employees - when they should be doing both. The City Hall was packed with supporters for and against the motion, including staff and several members of BizFed. In a collective effort with the California Hotel and Lodging Association, American Hotel and Lodging Association and the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, our voices were heard and we were able to defeat the motion. The city council instead adopted a resolution promising that the City of Long Beach will further look into the issue or workplace safety and they will revisit the issue when they have more information.  A special THANK YOU to Long Beach City Councilmembers Al Austin, Dee Andrews, Suzie Price, Daryl Supernaw and Stacy Mungo for supporting hotels, workers and the local economy.
