Job Description: Development Officer
Founded in 2007, the Los Angeles County Business Federation, better known as BizFed, is a grassroots alliance of more than 150 top business groups representing 278,000 businesses with 3 million employees throughout LA County. We advocate on critical issues affecting business growth, job creation, and economic vitality in LA County. BizFed works at every level of government that touch LA businesses – all 88 cities in the County, regional regulatory boards, in Sacramento and Washington DC.
BizFed is nothing without our members. Our 155 association members provide the diverse power in numbers that make BizFed’s advocacy effective. 110 companies, public agencies, and educational institutions also tap in to the power and protection of this alliance and fund the machinery. BizFed is unique in the state and as far as we know, in the country. The BizFed team are community organizers for our massive grassroots network of business networks. We amplify the voices of our members to be more effective advocates for policies and projects that are good for our regional economy.
The Development Manager will be responsible for bringing on new members and maximizing revenue from sponsorships and grants. They will be responsible for the entire sales cycle – from prospecting, pitching, collections, on-boarding new members, and helping to secure renewals year after year. This position reports to the Director of Development.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a self-starting, tech-savvy, detail-oriented, quick-learning, super-competent team player. We need someone who is a sales person at heart with the interest and capacity to understand and talk about complex policy issues for a wide variety of industries. The successful person will have the sophistication and confidence to build relationships with BizFed’s members (top executives, public affairs professionals, association heads) and the savvy to connect disparate dots.
This position is a 1099 contractor position (everyone on the BizFed team is a contractor) with a flexible work schedule. Salary range is $45,000 to $55,000, depending on experience with the potential for $15,000 in bonus based on achievement of quarterly revenue goals.

- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills coupled with outstanding listening skills
- Proven sales experience- ability to maintain and exceed sales quota/revenue goals
- At least 3 years prior work experience with fundraising, sales, public policy, community
- Independent starter with a strong work ethic and resilient with rejection
- Team player attitude with an interest in helping others succeed
- Ability and means to drive all over LA County
- Ability to speak and correspond with professionals and elected officials who are experts in their
- Multilingual capabilities highly desirable (Spanish, Chinese)
- Ability to produce a large quantity of detail-oriented work at high quality
- Internet savvy and ability to use a variety of technology tools to research, engage, and present
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with and ability to become proficient in Adobe Acrobat, social media, CRM email tools (e.g.: Campaign Monitor, Constant Contact) and website content management tools (e.g.: WordPress, NationalBuilder)
- Generate and manage pipeline of leads through to close. Manage the full sales cycle: Lead
- Prospect, network, set appointments with decision makers to share how membership would
- Assist in maintaining long-term member relationships
- Present about BizFed in front of large groups of business people
- Stay up to date on relevant policy issues
- Think creatively about to engaged members at every stage of sales of cycle to achieve goals
