The Hon. Barbara Lee “Opening a New Chapter in U.S.-Cuba Relations” For more than 50 years, U.S.-Cuba relations have been strained by embargo, the state sponsor of terrorism list, and severed diplomatic relations. In December 2014, however, Barack Obama and Raúl Castro announced that full diplomatic ties would be restored between the two countries. As both countries work toward renewed relations, concerns remain regarding human rights abuses in Cuba, including the repression of critics of the Cuban government. Will normalization of U.S.-Cuba relations improve human rights in the island nation? Can Congress agree on next steps regarding trade and travel with Cuba? Is reform coming to Cuba? Congresswoman Barbara Lee will discuss renewed relations between the U.S. and Cuba and what impact they will have on both the American and Cuban people.
