ACTION ALERT: Act to Protect Housing Providers’ Ability to Operate

Share This :

ON TUESDAY 2/18, The LA County Board of Supervisors AND the LA City Council will simultaneously be voting on their respective versions of an EVICTION MORATORIUM, a further attack on housing providers under the pretext of the LA Wildfires.

HERE'S THE SKINNY: On Friday February 14, after an array of last-minute failed                  attempts by LA City Councilmembers to amend Item 13, the proposed Citywide Eviction Moratorium passed by the LA City Housing and Homelessness Committee, Councilmember John Lee proposed a motion to "receive and file" the item, essentially to kill it. While the motion passed 8-3, The Council President reconsidered the motion after a concern from Councilmember Nithya Raman was raised that she was "not aware that we were still voting on Item 13." The Council then re-opened the vote on Item 13 where it only managed to garner 5 votes to "receive and file" item 13. The City Council will continue the hearing on this item at its February 18 City Council Meeting in the form of Item 33.

As if this was not enough, the County of Los Angeles recently introduced a similar motion, spearheaded by Supervisor Lindsey Horvath in the form of Item 9, to provide a blanket, unconditional affirmative defense to eviction for non-payment of rent for an entire year. This motion will also be debated on Tuesday February 18.

WHY IT MATTERS: The proposals for Eviction Moratoriums at the City and County level are completely unnecessary given other new ordinances already in place from the City, County, Governor’s Executive Orders and Mayor’s Executive Orders AND rental assistance that has become available.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Below we have prepared two separate action emails to members of the LA City Council and members of the LA County Board of Supervisors demanding a NO vote on these misguided and unnecessary motions. Please take 2 minutes and take action!
