Position Summary

The President/CEO (CEO) is BizFed’s chief strategist, public advocate, and visionary leader. The CEO works closely with the Board to develop and execute the organization’s strategic priorities, strengthens BizFed’s influence across government and regulatory sectors, leads staff and contractors, fosters strong membership engagement, ensures financial stability, and serves as BizFed’s primary spokesperson and lobbyist.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Mission Advancement

  • Coordinate with the Board Chair, Executive Committee, and members to drive BizFed’s strategic vision and annual priorities.
  • Implement Board directives into clear operational plans while ensuring high-impact delivery across all programs.
  • Lead alignment and coordination of BizFed’s cross-entity organizations – BizFed Institute, Central Valley BizFed and the BizFed PAC as well as applicable grants management for these groups.
  • Promote and enhance the BizFed brand via social media, earned media and other external opportunities to maintain and enhance BizFed’s image.
  • Promote innovation, responsiveness, and long-term organizational sustainability.

 Financial Stewardship and Operational Excellence

  • Oversee annual budgeting, financial planning, and financial monitoring, and ensure required tax and regulatory reporting submissions are completed in timely manner (990s, etc.).
  • Develop and implement strategic plans/annual business plan and long-range planning.
  • Maintain internal systems, policies, due diligence and operational processes.
  • Ensure revenue diversity, sustainability, and responsible financial management and reporting.
  • Be successful in fundraising, including securing grants, cultivating corporate donors, managing investor relationships, and supporting revenue growth.
  • Plan and execute events that support fundraising, member engagement and advocacy.
  • Demonstrate strong financial acumen with the ability to oversee budgets, monitor financial performance, ensure fiscal accountability, and maintain accurate and compliant financial records in collaboration with finance staff and external partners.

External Relations, Government Engagement and Advocacy

  • Serve as BizFed’s primary representative to elected officials, regulatory bodies, civic institutions, business leaders, and media.
  • Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with policymakers at local, county, state, and federal levels.
  • Develop and execute advocacy strategies designed to create measurable policy outcomes.
  • Represent BizFed in public forums and hearings and build and enhance coalitions through strategic policy conversations.
  • Secure and attend in-person meetings with elected officials and effectively communicate policy positions using strong relationships across the many levels of government.  
  • Amplify BizFed’s brand, influence, and visibility as a leading voice for business.
  • Register as a lobbyist at the County of Los Angeles, City of Los Angeles, City of Long Beach, State of California and other jurisdictions as may be needed.

Organizational Leadership, Staff and Contractor Management

  • Oversee and manage all staff and contractor performance, recruitment, professional development, and team alignment with organizational goals.
  • Make staffing, restructuring, and vendor decisions necessary to ensure mission success and budget compliance.
  • Cultivate a collaborative, high-performance internal culture.
  • Develop leadership capacity within the organization

Communications, Membership Engagement and Brand Building

  • Lead integrated communications to ensure timely, accurate, and impactful outreach.
  • Serve as a compelling spokesperson.
  • Strengthen BizFed’s brand and regional visibility.
  • Cultivate strong membership relationships for retention and engagement.

Board Relations and Governance Support

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure strategic alignment and best practices for a non-profit organization including periodic updates of organizational bylaws.
  • Provide regular Board updates, recommendations, and insights.
  • Support strong Board recruitment and leadership succession.

Qualifications and Experience

Required:

  • Possess 10+ years of progressive leadership in advocacy, government affairs, public policy, economic development, or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business, public administration, non-profit management or a related field.
  • Have demonstrated ability to build and sustain high-level relationships with elected officials, regulators, business leaders, and civic partners.
  • Have strong management experience, including staff and contractor oversight.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute fundraising strategies in partnership with the board and senior leadership.
  • Experience and success in donor and investor management.
  • Experience in developing and managing an organizational budget and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrate proven advocacy outcomes with coalition-building successes.
  • Possesses outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Be strategically and politically astute, results-oriented, and relationship-driven.
  • Candidates should have flexibility in work schedule to include evenings and/or weekends and ability to travel as needed,

Preferred:

  • Leadership experience in a 501(c)(6), chamber, or similar business/trade association.
  • Familiarity with the Los Angeles city, county and California political and regulatory landscape.

Compensation

  • Annual salary range of $250,000 to $350,000 plus incentive package.
  • Competitive benefits (medical, dental, PTO, cellphone/internet allowance, etc.).

Work Location and Culture

  • Manage BizFed employees, who generally work remotely via Zoom, with the expectation that they are available by email, text, and phone during normal business hours. Employees also have daily access to co-working spaces throughout the Los Angeles region at their discretion.
  • Employees are also expected to attend regular (generally monthly) in-person team meetings at various locations throughout the area.
  • As needed, employees are expected to attend in-person public hearings, advocacy meetings, member events, and other similar in-person meetings and events.
