We're kicking off May Board week with a celebratory alert! A BizFed-opposed bill designated by the California Building Industry Association as a "Housing Killer" has been shelved, thanks in large part to your messaging efforts.
SB 571 (Allen) sought to establish new mandates for local governments to create one-size-fits-all evacuations plans for all new master planned communities. This conflicts with existing state laws that mandate reduced traffic flow, creating an irreconcilable bureaucratic conflict.
The bill also created another set of rules around fire safety (the fourth round of regulations or guidance issued in this area in 12 months!) creating needless confusion and conflicting direction. The end result? Delayed home construction and higher housing costs – with no guarantee of enhanced safety for residents.

We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the talking points in our widely circulated opposition letter. Even though this bill has been shelved, we anticipate similar proposals to surface in the near future. Let's continue pushing sensible, affordable, non-duplicative solutions that streamline housing production, rather than laws that exacerbate the state's housing crisis. Please contact Senior Policy Manager Chris Wilson with questions.
Onward!
