We did it!

Thanks to all you hard work and perseverance, we were successful in getting SB 799 (Portantino) vetoed by the Governor!

SB 799 was THE top priority for the California Labor Federation that would have depleted the already strained Unemployment Insurance Fund by allowing workers who voluntarily participate in a trade dispute to receive unemployment benefits after two seeks of being on strike.

Thank you @GavinNewsom for doing the right thing and vetoing #SB799. We need to fix the fiscal and structural system that is the EDD UI fund before expanding the program.

We appreciate your decisive and thoughtful approach in vetoing #SB799. We agree with your, now is not the time to increase costs or incur sizable debt. Thank you Governor @GavinNewsom

Thank you @GavinNewsom for vetoing #SB799 and not jeopardizing future partnership with the federal government. We must operate in conformity and compliance with federal law.

Here’s what our New California Coalition (NCC) leadership had to say:

“We thank Gov. Gavin Newsom for taking decisive action to maintain a vital safety net for Californians who are involuntarily out of work. His move to block a bill that would supersize California’s already massive $20 billion unemployment debt protects workers, jobs, and our economy,” said Tracy Hernandez, CEO of the New California Coalition. “Small business owners and everyday voters who spoke up throughout the legislative process are especially grateful their voices were heard,” Hernandez noted.

“Hardworking Californians owe Govern Newsom a big thank you for vetoing SB799,” said Jim Wunderman, Board Chair of the New California Coalition “Common sense and fiscal responsibility prevailed when Governor Newsom vetoed SB799, which would have put an even bigger burden on California small businesses and grown the $18 billion debt in California’s unemployment insurance fund,” concluded Wunderman.

Let’s all take a victory lap!

In your corner,
